It was really good to have a listening ear, someone who I knew wouldn't judge me or go and tell everyone. My counsellor seemed sympathetic and a very good listener. She helped my feelings feel valid and substantial. She also offered some possible solutions that I could try and helped me understand that the things I was going through as a parent to an adult child with these problems was very normal.
A few times I wondered why I was there, as I had managed to navigate my way through some very tough times with the aid of both my faith and family, however toward the end of my visits I could see the value in the visits even if just for the talking aspect of it. It felt good to just let it all pour out to someone tentatively listening.
