"The emergency departments ridiculous waiting times"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I am waiting in the emergency department as I write this I have been here for over 3 hours with my child who has had abdominal pain for two days. I have not seen a doctor and after asking how much longer I have been told at there is another child before mine still waiting. It is 10pm! A drunk needing stitches after a bar fight has been seen before my child and the young child sitting beside us. There is over 15 people waiting. This hospital is under staffed and is very poorly organised and an embarrassed to the state!

Dear Angry Parent

I am really very sorry to read your feedback with regard to your waiting time in the Emergency Department at Maroondah Hospital. As a parent myself, I realise that waiting for care with a sick child is indeed concerning. I do hope that your child has improved since you wrote. In response to your concern, we will review our triage process for children presenting to our Emergency Department but if you would like to provide some more specific information so that I can follow-up in more detail, please do let me know by email at alan.lilly@easternhealth.org.au

Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback.

Kind regards,

Alan Lilly.

Dear Angry Parent

As promised, I am posting this update to let you know that Dr Peter Archer, our Emergency Department Director and staff have reviewed this situation. Following the review, I have been able to determine that staff were engaged with a number of patients on that evening and in particular, a patient with complex needs following a physical assault resulting in a head injury. In turn, I realise that this prioritisation of care increased your wait and I am sorry for the delay. I hope that this response will provide you with reassurance that we did not have any systematic problems or issues in the Emergency Department on the night of your attendance. However, if you would like this reviewed any further, please do email me at alan.lilly@easternhealth.org.au Thanks again for taking the time to provide your feedback. Kind regards - Alan Lilly
