"Lack of follow-up and feedback at Box Hill Hospital"

About: Box Hill Hospital

(as a relative),

My partner overdosed on prescription drugs and was admitted to Box Hill Hospital. Not once was I contacted directly by the hospital for an update. On three occasions I requested a mental health review and also for an attending doctor to contact me back for an update on condition. No one from the hospital contacted me back.

My partner contacted me two days later to advise me they were being discharged. I proactively sought to see the doctor before collecting my partner as otherwise they would have just been discharged to me with no feedback.

Apparently mental health team did assess my partner and felt they were not suicidal and just escaping reality. What's the difference? They didn't contact me for any input. My partner was discharged to me with no care plan. I hope they don’t do it again this week. Thanks Box Hill Hospital for you level of care.

Dear be ashamed

I am so sorry to read your story and I do understand that you will feel that we have let you and your partner down badly on this occasion. What I can say is that communication with patients and their families is uppermost in our thinking and is indeed a regular part of clinical work, so I am at a loss to understand or explain why this happened as you have outlined. Please accept my sincere apologies for this and I can assure you that I will discuss this with our staff and use this an example of where communication has obviously fallen short of our shared expectations. I am very sorry for this and I do hope that your partner is on the road to a full recovery. However, if you do need any help or urgent mental health support, please call our Mental Health Triage line on 1300 721 927 which is a 24 hour service. The service is provided by fully qualified staff who are trained to assist people during very difficult times. Once again, please accept my sincere apologies.

Kind regards, Alan Lilly
