"Hope is so hard to find when you are drowned in despair"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Mental Health Adult Inpatient Units (IPU1 and IPU2)

(as the patient),

I would like to show my appreciation for the staff in IPU1 at Maroondah Hospital. I was recently admitted only for one night but have such respect for the people working there. Having a mental illness carries extreme pain, anxiety and shame- but I felt like a human being for once.

I'd like to say a special thanks to my nurse, Lisa. In just a short time she listened to me and gave me some hope that perhaps maybe things will get better.

There is a huge stigma attached to mental illness which I have experienced too many times in the emergency setting but what mental health needs is more recognition for the tough job the nurses have and more people like Lisa who really care and really listen.

Hope is so hard to find when you are drowned in despair, and I am thankful I was given some. Thank you: )

First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story on Patient Opinion.

It is so reassuring to read stories like yours where we are clearly making a difference in your care and recovery. I agree that there has been a long history of stigma with mental illness but fortunately, I also believe that this is changing with greater awareness. I also have no doubt that reading stories like your will inspire other clients and patients to tell their stories too.

I will take great pleasure in passing on your story to our frontline staff and their managers and will make sure that I also give a special mention to Lisa who helped you in your recovery.
