"They always say people aged over 50 shouldn't climb ladders - they are right!"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department MIA Radiology

(as the patient),

I was up a ladder, slipped and I fell to the ground with severe pain in my back. An ambulance was called & I was brought to the emergency department at Box Hill.

I was first treated in the emergency department and after x-rays & scans I was moved to the short stay area where I stayed until a bed became available at the Austin hospital the following evening.

I would especially like to thank the staff who looked after me in the short stay department - Catherine (afternoon shifts), Kath (night shifts) & Sarah (morning shift).

They always say people aged over 50 shouldn't climb ladders - they are right!

Dear POJUL05

Many thanks for your email and for sharing the story of you experience at Box Hill Hospital (including MIA), before you were transferred to the Austin Hospital.

I think your advice for people more than 50 years old climbing ladders is in fact true and of course, when it's just a "quick job" in the house or in the garden, it's easy not to heed that advice.

However, I am really delighted to read that you received good care and I will be sure to pass this feedback on to our front line staff and their managers including special mentions to Catherine, Kath and Sarah.

In the meantime, I hope that you are recovering well and be sure to heed that advice next time the thought of climbing a ladder goes through your mind!

Kind regards, Alan Lilly
