"Invasive procedure recommended when all I needed was antibiotics"

About: Knox Private Hospital

(as the patient),

I attended the hospital due to extremely painful abdominal cramps and was seen by a doctor in Emergency who stated that they thought I had diverticulitis caused by adhesion's of a large scar from an operation many years ago. No further testing was offered and I was told I needed to stay in hospital for 48 hours fasting and then a tube would be inserted to rectify the problem. I asked what would happen if I didn't do this and was told that, the man from upstairs might come and take me away. I researched diverticulitis on The Government Better Health Channel site online and antibiotics are the first method of treatment before any invasive procedures. I left and will never go to Knox Hospital again.

Dear JE

We are very sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience with us when you visited the emergency department recently. The outcome that you describe is not what we would wish for our patients. I would like to invite you to make contact with us via http://www.knoxprivatehospital.com.au/index.php/contact-us and we will get back to you as soon as possible to discuss the issues raised. We value your feedback and again, I am sorry that your experience in our hospital failed to meet your expectations.

Update posted by JE (the patient)

I attended Knox Private Hospital expecting better attention than a public hospital. I did not expect to be told what my problem was just by looking at a scar. I have complained to the hospital to be told that the doctor in question tried to talk me into staying for further tests which is not true. The doctor did say if I changed my mind they would be there until 1 am if I wanted to come back. I feel my visit that night was a waste of my money and time and will never go to Knox Hospital again.
