"My child received caring and very professional help"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was referred to Emergency recently with suspected Glandular fever and dehydration. We arrived at Emergency and my child was very unwell, with a high temperature. The staff at Triage were efficient and caring. As we were unsure of what was causing my child's illness, They were given a mask to wear - and we were taken into one of the Isolation rooms.

My child was given pain relief and anti nausea medication by one of the nurses. Within an hour of our arrival, blood tests were taken and we were told it would take about an hour for the results. Exactly 1 hour later the first two tests came back and one of the doctors came in to consult with me and my child.

After another 30 minutes arrangements were made for them to stay overnight for re-hydration and further observation. The Glandular screen blood tests came back, all clear but the doctors wanted to make sure their fever and pain was controlled.

My child received caring and very professional help - I was very grateful to all staff that encountered my child were so thorough, caring and kind. Thank you

Dear Mich

First of all, thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion. It's very clear to me just how important the right care is at the right time and in your case, I am so pleased to read that things went so well and so smoothly too. I can see that you would have been quite concerned.

I will be delighted to pass on your feedback to our staff and their managers too. When things get busy in the Emergency Department, it's often hard to find time to reflect and so sharing your story will enable our staff to see and feel just how appreciated they are by patients and families like yourselves.

I do hope that your child is on the road to recovery - glad to read also that it was not GF as we know the recovery time can be much longer.

Thank you again for sharing your story, we now have just under 90 stories on Patient Opinion which have been read more than 24000 times - it's a great way to spread the word on where we do things well and also, where we need to improve.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to share your story.

Kind regards and thanks, Alan Lilly
