A few years ago I had a fall and head-strike on a concrete floor, became unconscious and was undiscovered for about 18 to 20 hours. I suffered a traumatic brain injury and due to my immobility for such a length of time, I developed rhabdomyolysis.
I was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital ICU, transferred to the Neurology ward and then transferred to the Brain Injury Rehab Unit where I stayed for almost 3 months. In BIRU, I received physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, and speech therapy. The staff - particularly the speech therapist and the nurses - were extraordinary in their care.
I feel quite grateful for the care and feel quite lucky. I've recovered very well and left with only a slight speech deficit: a very mild (almost unnoticeable) fluent aphasia.
