"2nd Baby at Sunnybank Private"

About: Sunnybank Private Hospital / Maternity Unit

(as the patient),

Earlier this year I went into premature labour at 34 weeks, we rushed to Sunnybank Private Hospital. I was told to lay on the monitoring bed and was not allowed to move, through the 5 hours of excruciating pain I was made to lay on my back during each contraction while the midwives gave me injections into my legs multiple times.

I was so scared, no one explained to me or my boyfriend what was happening or that my baby would be okay. The midwife told me they had to do an internal check, they did it during one of my horrendously painful contractions and, though I asked them to stop they continued. I felt no one helped me, no one heard my cries. I was left there to bawl my eyes out. Finally my OB arrived. We were rushed into theatre and our baby was born via emergency c-section. The doctors took my baby and left the room, I was left alone feeling scared and heart broken. Long story short my baby was taken to Mater and I later was taken there also. The midwife who accompanied me to the Mater in the ambulance was amazing and supportive. The rest of my experience was the worst thing I have been through in my life.

After my baby and I arrived home I had to call to try to arrange a home visit from the midwives; neither Mater nor Sunnybank private wanted to come. Eventually Sunnybank private agreed to come. I had the 3 visits from the midwife who identified that I had PND (post-natal depression). There was no follow up support or information given to me other than to check yourself and your baby into Belmont mental health hospital. I felt this was a huge fail on their behalf. I felt left to deal with my PND alone with no support or guidance. 8 months on and I am still suffering. I even called my OB who refused my call as I was not their problem anymore. If I ever decide to have a 3rd baby Sunnybank Private sadly will not be delivering that baby.

Dear mumof2

Thank you for providing us with your feedback through Patient Opinion following your birth experience at Sunnybank Private Hospital. I was distressed to read your story and I would like to offer you and your family an apology that our service was less than you expected.

I am sorry to hear that you were unsupported and felt alone during what must have been a distressing and anxious time for you and your family. This is certainly not what we like to hear about our hospital. Telling us where we let you down helps us to focus on the areas that require further support and training for our staff so that other patients don’t have a similar experience.

Again I apologise that your birth experience was an unpleasant one and hope that your baby is doing well now. If you feel like that you are still suffering from PND, I urge you to see your GP for a referral to Belmont Mother and Baby Unit or a Maternal and Child Health clinic in your area or call 1300health to obtain further assistance. If you feel that you would like to discuss this with us further, please contact me any time through our Sunnybank Private Hospital website.
