"Great care given to my daughter by staff at Broome Hospital"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to Broome Hospital with suspected appendix / kidney infection. The Triage experience was fantastic as the GP had called prior to our arrival and briefed the triage nurse of the circumstances as my daughter was in a lot of pain.

She was assessed promptly and bloods, urine and test ran straight away.

The doctor had asked for me to leave the cubicle as my daughter is an adult to ask a personal question that she may have not had answered had I have been present. I thought that was very considerate in respecting her privacy.

She was admitted and stayed on the ward for 4 nights, nursing staff were efficient and caring. 2 ultrasounds were carried out to check for any significant signs of abnormality in the pelvic and uterine region. She had received antibiotics through IV and was monitored and medicated well for pain relief.

She was placed into a shared room and although I had private health cover was not told by anyone I could use this and be put into her own room. I was told by the administration clerk on the last night and my daughter was moved into her own room.

Overall great care given by all!

Dear hospitaldaughter

Many thanks for sharing with us your experiences. I do hope your daughter is feeling much more comfortable, and is well on the road to a full recovery after her illness.

Our staff at Broome Hospital will be pleased by your kind remarks. Thank you for your feedback about not being informed sooner about having a single room through private insurance cover. I will make sure Hospital Management take this on board at Broome and across our other sites so that, in future, our patients and their carers are made aware of this service at the earliest opportunity.

Best wishes

David Gaskell

Dear "hospital daughter"

Thank you for sharing your daughter's recent experience at Broome Hospital. As a parent, I realise it is always difficult seeing your child in pain and discomfort. I am glad your daughter received timely, appropriate and respectful care. I hope she is feeling better and making a speedy recovery.

I will follow up with the Regional Director of Nursing in regards to the private room access

Kind regards

Dear Hospital Daughter

Following up on the private room issue, I'm pleased to advise that posters are being displayed around the hospital and brochures, available for all patients explaining private room usage, are placed in the admission packs. Also available is a Patient Liaison Officer, available week days for help and advice. As a private patient, every effort will be made for a single room, however on some occasions this may not be an option due to the medical priority of patients with specific needs.

I have contacted the Patient Liaison Officer to ensure visibility and communication is happening and directed her to the PO site to view your story.

Thank you for your comment. It has enabled us to highlight this area and reassess our procedures.

Kind regards to you and your daughter

Maureen Crowther
