"felt unheard during emergency c-section"

About: Box Hill Hospital

(as the patient),

I had to have an emergency c-section following an induction. I discussed my anaesthetic history with the anaesthetist, which included that anaesthetics wear off really quickly, e.g. Lignocaine should last 60 mins on average lasts only 20 mins for me. The baby was delivered and then as they were suturing I tried to report that I could feel pain and what they were doing. But no one was standing near me. Then I was informed to calm down and it was normal to feel deep pressure. It wasn't until I screamed and showed that I could lift my previously very dead legs that they believed me. I was given lots of pathetic excuses like the team had just handed over and so the next team just didn't know and that it was unfortunate.

Dear km2piper

Thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion. I am really sorry to read about your painful experience and also, to read that we really didn’t follow this up properly with you in terms of recognising your discomfort and need for more relief to prevent this. I am also sorry also that you feel that you were just “brushed off” by our staff. I would like the opportunity to mend this situation and would like to follow this up with you by asking one of our Patient Relations Advisors to contact you. With more information, we would then be guided by you in terms of next steps but I think that it may then be helpful to then ask one of our senior clinical staff to discuss further with you face to face or by phone. If you would like to do this, pleas email me at alan.lilly@easternhealth.org.au and I will be happy to arrange this for you.

In the meantime, I am sorry for leaving you feeling like this. I hope to hear from you.

Kind regards, Alan Lilly
