"my visit to the Orthopedic specialist"

About: Specialist in the Curtin Electoral District

(as the patient),

I went with shoulder problems. I am over 50, lifetime of physical work and sport. Needed my bicep tendon (long head) fixed. What I didn't need is to have someone say to me loudly and slowly FOUR times and talk right over the top of what I was trying to say "You have arthritis in your shoulder" - four times! Rude, unnecessary. I am not thick, I am intelligent I know I have arthritis, who doesn't at my age. I wasn't going for the arthritis, or for miracles, I only needed my tendon fixed. The first ortho I saw only wanted to cut it. I didn't want it cut I wanted it fixed. That' is why I went to the second one. Nearly didn't go back to him either. So had it fixed. Out of my sling a week and it came out. Had to have it done again. Turns out its only 30% healed when you come out of the sling. Would have been nice to know that! He told me the second time. I hate being a plus 50 year old woman, I feel like I am regarded as being on the scrap heap even though I take a lot of effort to keep fit and strong. I do my bit, how about the medical profession does theirs? I pay, I'm a private, not public patient. Listen to your patients. Again, we are not all dumb! Good manners go a long way and a bit of respect. And even if you haven't the time to explain everything a web link, some printed notes that spell out the detail would all be useful. And although I did scour the net and got a lot of info I didn't find out about the rate of healing till too late.
