"Second opinion"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

The surgeon whom I was requested to see made it clear that due to my cardiac history he had no hesitation in deciding I should attend for a procedure in Perth where there was emergency care should it be required. I would assume their opinion was appropriately documented in my clinical file and also referred to PATS.

In good faith and to save the health system $400 I took the decision to book flights. Over the recent years I have booked my flights with no issue from PATS.

The issue is that, notwithstanding the opinion of your surgeon, someone decided that a second opinion was necessary. About 7 days later I again attended Broome Hospital this time to be assessed by, I believe an anaesthetist, who verbally informed me that in his opinion the procedure could be conducted in Broome!

On enquiring when I might have the procedure I was informed your Anaesthetist had made no entry in my clinical file or made the appropriate referral!

I strongly believe I am entitled to Broome Hospital reimbursing me the $77 cancellation fee I was charged.

Thank for your feedback concerning “second opinion”.

There a number of factors in the issues you have raised and I would suggest you contact the Senior Medical Office at Broome Hospital (9194 2855) to discuss the clinical aspects of your particular case.

In relation to Patients Assistance Travel Scheme (PATS), in most circumstances permanent WA country residents can be provided with financial assistance under PATS to access Specialist services not locally available. While referring Medical Practitioners have some knowledge of patient eligibility under PATS, prior to incurring any expense patients should always check their eligibility for PATS support by contacting their local Kimberley Hospital or call Broome PATS Office on 1800 914100.

Thank you for providing this feedback and I trust this information provides the opportunity for you to follow up your specific issues.
