"Concern over waiting time."

About: Specialist in the Sydney Electoral District

(as the patient),

I called 20mins ahead of my appointment time to check on any schedule delays and was told it was 15 minutes only. On arrival I was acknowledged by 1 of the 2 staff & told to take a seat. I noticed the waiting room was crowded so I asked what was the wait time and was then told 2 patients were ahead of me. When I asked why was I not told this when I called she answered "it is out of our control, there is a patient who came in with an urgent issue" but then the person I spoke with by phone said again that the wait time was only 15 minutes. I felt I was being deceived and knew then the wait would be much longer so I said I needed to put more money into my parking meter. By this stage it was already a 35minute delay from my original appointment time and still 2 people were ahead of me. I turned around and went back to the desk & said I did not think this situation is out of their control. I challenged them politely saying that this treatment is inconsiderate of patient's time and expense. They then said "doctor is very busy" and "the patient ahead of me did not mind them putting another in front of her" as if I should just be complacent and do the same. I then asked to reschedule my appointment for the 1st appointment on any day which turned out to be a 9. 15am so I assumed I would be the 1st person the doctor would see. On the morning of my appointment I was caught in traffic and called to let them know I would be 5 minutes late. When I arrived I was told doctor was still on his hospital rounds & there was one person ahead of me. I asked why was I not told when I called. The staff member just shook her head and I was told to take a seat in the outside waiting area. I decided not to leave the room and said to them they were inconsiderate of people's time and expense. They just shirked at me in a derisive manner and said I should take it up with the doctor. On paying the $525. 00 fee for a little over 15 minute consultation the staff member was full of non verbal contempt in tone & manner. I didn't take it up with the doctor as I could hardly get a word in and also having to focus on the reason for my visit with little more than 1 uninvited question felt I was on a strict time management "sausage machine" process.

This doctor might be top in his field but I would never recommend him. He has got to be the person responsible for the culture of contempt in his staff and as for his treatment expertise, he did not mention well known new procedures soon to replace an outdated and dubious operation he was recommending for me even though my condition is far from urgent.
