"Admitted to Hospital after hurting my knee."

About: Halls Creek Hospital

(as the patient),

When I came in to hospital, hospital staff put me in a wheelchair and told me to wait to be seen in the waiting room. There were two other people that came in after me and staff saw them first instead of me. I felt that no one wanted to help me. I was sitting there in pain, waiting to be seen. To improve this, I can recommend that staff assess how much pain someone is in when they come through the door. If that person has to wait, like I did, I think that pain relief should be an important part of the service. I didnt like waiting in too much pain. In the end, I found out that I tore a cartilage in my knee.

Dear RYRYRY,

I am sorry you had to wait in pain for attention, did you tell the nurse you had pain? I was pleased to hear that you had a wheelchair provided to take the weight off your knee and to give you some assistance in moving around. I am also pleased you were seen by a doctor and had a diagnosis for your problem. I hope your pain is now under control.

I would like to give you some information about how the Emergency Department triage system functions. When patients come through to the Emergency Department there is a triage system in place to assess the clinical acuity of the patient. The patients are seen in order of clinical priority, this is not always the order in which they arrive. This can be confusing for people in the waiting room as the person that comes in after you and is seen before you may look well, but their clinical condition may be worse as assessed by the Australian National Triage Scale. We use the triage system as a predictor of how unwell a patient is on presentation and how urgently they need to be seen by clinical staff. This system is well researched and is used in all public hospitals in Australia.

If you could provide some personal details to me I could investigate what has happened and provide you with some direct feedback.

My phone number is 08 91664233 if you would like to discuss this further, please ask for Donna Hindmarsh or email Donna.Hindmarsh@health.wa.gov.au and I can investigate and provide you feedback.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention we strive to provide a high level of service to our community, feedback assists us to improve our service.

Kind regards

Donna
