"Wound care services in the Kimberley."

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I recently had surgery and unfortunately my wound got infected. I was travelling across the Kimberley and was seen in both Broome and Kununurra Hospitals. It was very easy to access wound care in Broome, I rang the reception who put me through to the Wound Clinic and I was seen the next day with excellent care.

However, it is not so easy to get access to wound care in Kununurra, as there does not seem to be a clear pathway nor dedicated wound care service available. Staff did not seem to be clear on how I could get my wound followed up apart from waiting in ED or seeing a private GP. I did get my wound reviewed and the care was wonderful. My wound is healing and I didn't need antibiotics as it was so well managed by the nurses at both sites. Excellent outcome! Thank you all.

I would recommend that Kununurra reviews the wound care service it provides, as it would be great if it was as easy as a phone call to get an appointment and avoid unnecessary infections, illness and clogging up of ED for wound reviews.

Dear Katmj68

Thank you for posting your story on Patient Opinion about your recent experience at Broome and Kununurra hospitals in regard to your wound care. I was pleased to read you were seen in a timely, friendly and professional manner at Broome hospital and finally at Kununurra hospital.

Kununurra Hospital has a home care nurse who does do dressings but she is often out and about visiting patients in the community.

Your suggestion for a dressing clinic at Kununurra hospital has been taken on board and referred to the Operations Manager to follow up and hopefully improve the service in the future. Thank you kindly for taking the time to provide us with this feedback.

I hope you have enjoyed our beautiful Kimberley and your wound has continued to heel.

Kind regards

Maureen
