"Antenatal care in Exmouth"

About: Exmouth Health Service

(as the patient),

Not much!

Firstly it seemed the doctor who did my 7 week 'dating' scan didn't know how the use the ultrasound machine, so although he found the heartbeat he couldn't give us an accurate due date so I spent the rest of the pregnancy having to try to remember my last period!

The midwife doing the monthly checks seemed lazy. It seemed to me that she didn't measure the belly size or heart rate accurately (done too quickly) and then sent me home. She didn't divulge any information unless I asked for it. I'm just glad it was my second pregnancy because I would have been underprepared and anxious.

For the fasting diabetes test I had to line up with all other pathology patients (I was at the hospital when it opened) so that my first reading was 40 minutes after it was meant to be, making the test last much longer- pretty difficult to be fasting and pregnant and to make it go longer!

And to have to leave town a month before the baby is due, alone, is very difficult.

Dear Red

Thank you for providing feedback on the care you received. I’m sorry to hear that your experience of our service has left you less than satisfied. We are investigating your complaint and there are a number of issues raised that we are concerned about. The care you have described is not the quality that we aim to provide and we want to ensure that all maternity patients receive professional, timely and compassionate care throughout their pregnancy and we are keen to discuss all the matters you have raised. Dating scans are usually completed by a qualified sonographer and they would be able to provide a reasonably accurate due date so we would like to discuss what happened with your scan.

I have spoken to Jan Cook the Acting Operations Manager Gascoyne who would like an opportunity to discuss your concerns further. If possible could you please call Jan on 9941 0555 (Carnarvon Hospital), your call would be appreciated and you can continue to be anonymous if you wish. You are also able to contact myself on 9956 8695 or email michele.young@health.wa.gov.au and I can pass on your contact details to Jan. As a third option you can contact Liz Kelly, Executive Services Project Officer on 9956 2291.

Once again, I am sorry that you have had this experience with our service and I would like you to know that this feedback is very helpful in terms of highlighting where we need to improve. I hope you will contact us so that we can work with you to ensure your care meets your needs.

Kind Regards

Michele
