"Should we have received antibiotics earlier?"

About: Geraldton Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

After taking my child to Geralton emergency hospital in the early hours with a nasty cough, temp and a weeping ear I was told this was all normal and viral and it was too early to tell if they would need antibiotics. I was satisfied that the chest was clear and that the waxy-clear coloured weeping ear was nothing to worry about, we left within a half hour of arriving feeling like a Mum who's overreacted to having a sickly child.

10 days later, the other ear begins to weep too and I have a child who is uncharacteristically clingy, not sleeping great and is getting upset over silly things (but not in obvious pain). So I ring our ENT nurse who asks us to immediately take our child to the nearest chemist where she has faxed through a script for antibiotic ear drops. (We are now in Broome). She said yes this is common for children with grommets however everytime it occurs immediately put them on a course of antibiotic ear drops. Perhaps if we were given this information at Geraldton Hospital our tropical holiday might've been a slightly different experience.

Dear Not an overreacting Mum

As a Mum myself I understand how upsetting and stressful having a sick child can be and I do hope you child is well now. I am sorry to hear about your experience at the Emergency Department. The WA Country Health Service - Midwest aims to provide accessible, safe, high quality care for everyone and no one should feel that they can’t attend the department and receive appropriate medical care and advice.

We are concerned about your complaint, and would like to be able to investigate your issues and respond to you more comprehensively. To do this however we need more information from you and hope that you will be able to contact us so this can occur. If you would like to do this you can contact me on 9956 2291 or email Liz.Kelly@health.wa.gov.au. Alternatively you can contact the Regional Medical Director, Dr Andre Nel on 9956 8742 and we can begin the review of your child’s care.

It is very important that we receive feedback from patients and their carers when our services do not meet their needs as it enables us to identify what went wrong and put in place strategies to prevent it happening again. Thank you for writing to us and I hope to hear from your soon.

Kind Regards

Liz
