"Four days waiting for surgery that wasn't coming"

About: Maroondah Hospital

(as the patient),

I was transported from Angliss Hospital for urgent surgery on my hand and ring finger, 2 broken bones, 1 dislocated knuckle, severed flexor tendons, laceration to the bones on finger, spent 4 days waiting at Maroondah Hospital on fasting 20 hours a day each day (3 meals...1 medium plate half full, 1 small jelly, 1 cup of tea in 4 days . I'm a 6, 4 120kg tradesman) every day they would tell me I'm booked in first thing in the morn. Its important to reattach the tendons asap (they shrink 2cm over 8-10 days). My girlfriend left her dying mothers side to come down (4 hours travel) to be with me during the op and take me back up there. By the 3rd day she was breaking down crying because her mum could pass at any minute and she's being lied to every day. That was it. I left and am trying to organise to get the op done near her mums and I'm in so much pain with nothing but 4 days on such an important issue. My hopes of being able to still play guitar and piano again with ease are pretty much stuffed. Thanks for making the poor nurses do all the rubbish interaction because of the admins inept choices.

Dear horrified

I would like to sincerely apologise for your recent experience at Eastern Health. From reading your feedback, I can see this was not only a very difficult time for you, but also your girlfriend. The lack of communication regarding your surgery being postponed and the disruption to your personal life no doubt added to your negative experience. At the time of your admission, we experienced a very high demand for urgent surgery resulting in the postponement of your surgery.

Following your discharge, we made contact with you to find a solution and in one respect, I am pleased you were able to obtain your surgery close to your girlfriends home but disappointed Eastern Health was not able to assist you. If you do require any follow up, please contact us and we would be very happy to assist. Should you wish to do so, please contact me via email at david.plunkett@easternhealth.org.au

I hope your surgery has gone well and wish you a speedy recovery. I certainly hope you are back playing the guitar and piano with ease quickly.

I wish you and your girlfriend all the very best for the future.

Kind regards

David
