"An experience regarding a day procedure in the Gynae unit at Sunshine Hospital - Vic"

About: Sunshine Hospital

(as the patient),

I had my pre-admission appointment 2 weeks before the procedure which was very thorough and informative. At all stages I was given the time to ask questions and be informed. I arrived for my procedure a few minutes late at 7: 05. Unfortunately I was first on the list and had missed my name being called. It was probably 30 min before I started the prep. Despite my delay possibly making the list run late, at no time was I pressured or hurried during the prep process. As a former nurse I was impressed at the professionalism and thoroughness of each staff member at each point of the process of being prepped and then after the procedure. All staff checked not just my name and date of birth, but ensured which procedure I was having, my allergies and checked in with me as to any concerns I had. The anaesthetist was particularly good. I have a complex medical history and can be hard to cannulate. He went through every relevant part of this history and paid particular attention to a back injury I have, which could have been exacerbated by the physical position I needed to be in during the surgery. He was also very empathetic and had great interpersonal skills which kept me calm and re-assured. After the procedure, he even came back to see how I had gone and if my back was ok. I went home that afternoon and was given a follow up call the next day to check in with me and how I was faring. From start to finish all staff followed the correct protocols and procedures, but did so in a friendly and un-rushed manner. I was very impressed.
