"Excellent care from ED and Ward staff at Geraldton Regional Hospital"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I cannot begin to thank the staff at the Geraldton Emergency Department for the care they provided to me when I arrived with intense abdominal pain. I was seen by several nurses and doctors who worked together to assess and diagnose the severity of my symptoms. Every staff member properly introduced themselves to me, including doctors, nurses, clerk and Patient Services Assistance (PSA) workers, and each fully explained what they were to do for me and why. I was constantly reassured and asked if I had any questions as my pain was brought under control. My husband and I were also updated on any progress that was being made in my diagnosis and my privacy was respected. After several diagnostic tests and scans I was admitted to the ward for further care.

The professionalism and friendliness continued during the 11 days I had in various sections of the ward by all members of staff. I was also treated with respect and consideration by the nursing staff and at no time felt like a nameless patient. I became quite unwell one day and was moved to a more appropriate room for a couple of nights until I had improved even though the hospital was very full at the time. The kitchen staff were also very obliging when my diet was changed several times at late notice during my stay and always found something for me. The PSA workers were also all friendly and accommodating.

On discharge, everything I needed to know for follow up care was explained and printed out for me.

This was the first time I had ever been hospitalised and am grateful for the care I received from all hospital staff.

Dear Belly Bug

Thank you for your story about your experience at Geraldton Hospital, we greatly appreciate your thoughtful and highly complimentary feedback. Feedback like this tells us what elements of our service are valued and encourages us to continue to implement changes that deliver high quality, safe care in partnership with patients and clients.

It was wonderful to hear that the staff involved in your care properly introduced themselves. WACHS Midwest participates in the “Hello my name is” campaign that advocates for all health care staff to introduce themselves to all consumers and staff members. The campaign founded by Kate Granger is based on the belief that introductions are not just common courtesy but help make human connections to begin the therapeutic relationship and build trust in difficult circumstances. Your feedback reinforces our commitment to implementing this campaign to ensure all patients have a similar experience to you.

I hope your recovery continues to go well.

Kind Regards

Liz
