"Audiology services in Regional WA"

About: Geraldton Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

Earlier this year, my child was referred to Geraldton Regional Hospital for a hearing test. I was informed at the time that it would probably take 12 months or more for that appointment to be made. Recently I went to the Audiology section of Geraldton Regional Hospital to inquire if an appointment was to be made soon. I was told it would not happen for at least another 6 months.

Why is it so difficult for the public health system to provide basic services to the regions?

Dear Hearing Test

I am sorry to hear that you have experienced a long wait for a hearing test for your child. We aim to provide these services in a more timely manner and are concerned about current waiting times. Unfortunately waiting times have increased for this service in the Midwest as there is a shortage of qualified audiologists who can work with children in both the public and private sector. WACHS Midwest is working to address this and is currently negotiating for additional services to meet demand to be able to increase service availability very soon.

Whilst the Midwest works to increase the availability of the service, patients are being prioritised based on age and clinical need. We would be grateful if you would contact us so that we can discuss your situation further and see if there are options to support your family.
