"My experience during the birth of my baby."

About: Angliss Hospital

(as the patient),

While in labour with my second baby I requested an epidural after not progressing in my dilation. At some stage after this I was seen by a doctor who informed me I required a caesarean as I was not progressing and they would do a spinal anaesthetic instead of an epidural in theatre. I agreed to this however I did not go to theatre until hours after this. There was no communication as to where the anaesthetist was, why I had to wait so long and why I could not have an epidural while waiting for theatre. From the time I requested an epidural until my baby was born was 3 hours! ! I was totally ignored. No one should be treated this way. Absolutely appalling.

This is unacceptable and was traumatic for not only myself but my husband and sister who were there supporting me.

I have spoken with a staff member who has been excellent in dealing with my complaint however I'm still extremely angry about my treatment and want higher management to reassure me this will not happen to other women entrusted into the care of the Angliss. I want this matter to be investigated and resolved. 3 hours is far too long to be ignored. Why? ? ?

Dear Mamamich26

I would like to thank you for providing your feedback on Patient Opinion and was so sorry to hear of your experience. I agree with you that three hours is a long time to wait especially, from your comments, without an explanation.

In order for me to address what has happened to you and to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else, I would really welcome it, if you would be contact me privately at david.plunkett@easternhealth.org.au

In doing this, I will be able to have your particular experience investigated and therefore, through this, tailor the action we take to prevent this happening again.

I hope to hear from you soon but will respect it if this is not the course you would like to take.

Take care and I hope you and your family are enjoying your new baby and the wonderful joy they bring to our lives.

Kind regards

David
