"Admission to the Trauma Unit after a MVA"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as the patient),

My husband and I were involved in an MVA recently. I was admitted to the Trauma Unit. Where I was very well looked after.

I was in the Trauma Unit with a neck brace on for a number of days. During this time I had an X-ray and CT scan, both of which showed no fractures. The doctor then ordered an MRI, which showed 5 wedge fractures in my thoracic spine and another in my lumbar spine.

I was then transferred to a lower care ward, but the MRI wasn't taken with me. As a result I didn't receive the appropriate care once I was there. The next day the physio had me out of bed and walking and the OT said I could go home. The doctor only ordered panadol for my discharge and I was in agony. When I explained the situation to the physio, they then went and checked my notes. When the physio returned they told me not to do the exercises they'd given me because I did have fractures and they were not appropriate exercises.

I was very well cared for by all staff and they were all lovely, but whoever is responsible for the transfer of information needs to get it right, because that information then influences the follow-up care of the patient. I have now seen my GP who has given me appropriate advice and pain relief.

Dear Old Nurse,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a balanced reflection of your care provided at Royal Perth Hospital. Initially, can I apologise unreservedly for those times where we regretfully fell short of expectations.

You are quite right in highlighting the critical importance of: 1) clear communication between all the members of our staff who are involved in the care of a patient, and 2) ensuring that when a patient is discharged we have considered carefully all their requirements.

I have fed back your experience to the areas concerned, so that we can put in place some immediate steps to improve this. Royal Perth Hospital has a group that looks specifically at improving the communication and handover of information between staff involved in patient care and your comments will be provided to them. In addition to this we also have a significant project going on in the hospital relating to patient discharge and are putting in a new process to improve this experience for our patients. I look forward to coming back to your story with an update once I have more specific information to share about these processes.

Once again thank you for telling us about your experience. I wish you well in your recovery and future health.

Kind regards

Dr Aresh Anwar
