"Inpatient Experience"

About: Cabrini Hospital - Malvern

(as the patient),

Recently I had to have a day procedure. When I woke from surgery I had quite a severe amount of swelling. The nurse in Recovery was quite concerned and spoke to the Anaesthetist and the Surgeon and both felt that I would be best kept in hospital overnight. I was very thankful for this.

I spent the following night in a 4 bed ward with 2 elderly, confused, agitated ladies. I spent the night running up and down to the nurses station in an effort to prevent these two ladies from falling and injuring themselves. This, along with the yelling and agitation of one of the ladies kept me awake all night. After several hours of arguing with her the nursing staff moved the woman's bed down to near the nurses station so that they could keep an eye on her. I found it very exhausting. I thought that this could have been handled better for the sake of the other patients in the room.

Fortunately the next night the room was quieter.

Dear Bionic,

As the Executive Director of Cabrini Malvern, I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Your story is of concern to me. Cabrini takes pride in the quality of our care and strives to provide our patients with an excellent experience. Unfortunately, on this occasion, we have not done this and I would like to sincerely apologise. Your experience, during the first night of your stay was not what we would want – for any of our patients.

Sometimes it can be challenging to find appropriate accommodation for people whose admission is unplanned. This is one of the issues we are addressing with our planned new development, which will have almost entirely single rooms.

I am pleased that your concerns relating to your swelling when you woke from surgery were met satisfactorily by the nurse in recovery, surgeon and Anaesthetist.
I have forwarded your feedback onto the relevant manager and I respect your decision to stay anonymous, however should you wish to discuss your concerns further, please contact our Customer Relations Office on crm@cabrini.com.au or 9508 1661.

Kind regards

Dr Simon Woods,

Executive Director, Cabrini Malvern.
