My adult son who suffers badly with anxiety had to have planned surgery. He did everything right prior to attending and turned up as directed at the designated time of 6: 30 speaking to a lovely lady by the name of Ruth. This was the first general anaesthetic since he was a baby, so extremely nerve racking for him.He saw the first nurse promptly after arrival, however at 8: 20 after watching many other patients receive their call up for their procedures and sitting there for nearly 2 hours I noticed his tension and stress threshold start to implode. I spoke to the woman behind the counter (Not Ruth) explaining that his anxiety was playing up and would he be going in soon. Her response to my question was - He's just going to have to lose it. Not sure if she has ever dealt with mental health issues prior, but it didn't sound like it. We were told he would not be seen until around 10am, so go for a walk. (He was having a foot operation.) He then proceeded to have a melt down which took around 40 mins during which he agreed to see someone in Mental Health to calm him. That was OK, however this same woman walked past him 5 mins after calming him and asked - has he settled down yet? - within earshot of my son which set him off again. He did finally have his operation after 10 am but this woman's behaviour during this situation shows that she lacks the training required to deal with people dealing with anxiety and other mental illnesses. No wonder he refused to stay overnight at the hospital.
