During a recent tour of the facilities as part of a birthing class, I was disappointed and surprised to see the state of the maternity ward. There are only two birthing suites, which would prove problematic if there were more than two births on a given day which is very possible. The rooms are old and there is only one single room. As a patient considering whether or not to use private health, I don't feel there is a great incentive to do so.

An overhaul and rethink of the space allocated to maternity is required to ensure the care and comfort of patients and to provide a workable environment for doctors and nurses on the maternity ward.

Thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion. I have referred your concerns to the Broome Operations Manager and below is her response.

Dear disappointed and surprised

Thank you for raising your concerns about room availability and space in the Maternity Unit at Broome Hospital

I would first like to say The Midwifery Group Practice program at Broome Hospital has been very successful in providing very positive patient experiences and we are certainly proud of the excellent care that mothers receive from our experienced midwives through this program.

However, as you have noted, an overhaul of the space allocated is required, and I can assure you there are ongoing plans for re-development of the unit, which include review of the volume and demand for the birthing suites and remodelling of the Maternity Unit within the hospital to incorporate more space. These are currently only at concept stage and therefore still quite a way off being realised.

I do want to reassure you that patients utilising their Private Health cover are provided the single room if it is available, based on clinical priority. This means that you would be allocated this room provided there is not another maternity patient who requires the room for a higher priority clinical reason. Alternatively, if the private room is unavailable for you and it is within the capacity of the unit at the time, you may be allocated a double room just for yourself.
