"Took out my own IV cannula."

About: Ipswich Hospital

(as the patient),

Ipswich Hospital nurse did not take me seriously when I came into the hospital by the ambulance. The paramedic put the IV in and gave me stuff to help me not feel dizzy and sick anymore and some other stuff. Did not work. I was sick of sitting there with an IV hurting my arm, with nothing attached to it.

I asked the Triage person if they could please remove it so I could go home as I would rather be lying in my bed than trying to stand up and staggering, when they won't help.

The Triage person told me they'd be 5 minutes. I gave it longer than that and decided to take it out myself.

Dear IV remover

We are really concerned about your story and encourage you to seek medical assistance if you are still unwell or having problems with your arm after removing the IV.

At West Moreton we welcome feedback from our consumers because it helps us to look at what we are doing well and where we need to make improvements. For example, we acknowledge it can be really frustrating for patients when they have to wait to be seen in the Emergency Department.

In order to ensure patients are seen in the order of clinical urgency, each patient is triaged by an experienced nurse and assigned a clinical urgency category. Please be assured we are committed to investigating and acting upon your concerns and that we are continuously working on ways to reduce waiting times in the Emergency Department.

If you would like to speak with our Consumer Liaison Service further about your experience, you are welcome to call us on 0409 275 503.

Best Wishes

Consumer Liaison Office
