About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as the patient),

I have already told my story of the wonderful care I received while in hospital, mainly by the nursing staff. I do however have a criticism about some of the meals I had. As I have ulcerative colitis I had to have a low fibre diet. Some of the meals were fine, but after 3 meals with just mashed potato and grilled tomato on the side, I had to tell them I didn't want anymore tomato. Then I was given mashed potato and mashed pumpkin. One meal I had included some sliced potato with sauce and baked pumpkin. Great. I didn't always get what I ordered. Once I had a goulash, but it was too spicy and I couldn't eat it. As far as I'm aware that is not suitable for ulcerative colitis. The meal deliverers did their best to give me something suitable when they could, but as I was in the last room there usually wasn't anything else left.

Dear Smiling,

I have now had the opportunity to get some feedback from both our catering and dietary teams.

Both wanted me to extend their apologies and acknowledged that sadly a low fibre diet can be very restrictive with limited choices but felt that potentially on occasions in your case, based on the feedback, appear to have been a bit too restrictive. There is, however, a significant list of vegetables, meals (mainly plain meats and casseroles) and sandwiches that you should have been able to choose from. The caterers are not privy to the patients’ ailments only their dietary requirements but even so felt an individual on low fibre diet should not have been served goulash.

The issues highlighted by you are going to be brought to the staffs’ attention at their next meeting.

As the catering team leaders should have been seeing you every morning with the options available for the day this feedback from patients relayed to staff should have a real impact on practice going forward.

The Catering team also wrote to me “Please assure “Smiling” that if they are in this situation at RPH again and the food service is not meeting expectations they can ask to speak to a dietitian or a senior catering officer who will be able and willing to resolve any issues that he/she might have”.

Once again with apologies from the entire multi-disciplinary team
