"Dismissive of what mattered to me"

About: Currambine Psychology Centre

(as the patient),

I was referred to Currambine Psychology. The reception staff were lovely and went out of their way to arrange appointments that were convenient for me.

Unfortunately the psychologist ended up making me feel worse. They would pick out minor elements of what I was telling them, and keep coming back to them, even though I repeatedly told them they weren't significant in the scheme of my situation. Sure, it's their job to pick out information that may seem obscure, and show me how it might be a bigger factor than I thought, but they couldn't even give me reasons for focusing on particular details, they just did.

I found their approach to be dismissive of what mattered to me, and judgmental. At times I felt like I was being interrogated. The therapy was not tailored for me, in fact it was almost like they had an invisible textbook in front of them, and that any deviations from this would confuse them, and they'd just find a random, irrelevant point in the invisible textbook to continue from. I'm not sure if they lack experience or empathy but overall I found my sessions with them to be of no benefit to me at all. This is very disappointing because I was reluctant to see a psychologist, and eventually I decided to with the hope that it would provide me with some useful insight, but I feel as lost as ever.

I've been in two minds about whether to post this review because I'm sure they're a nice person and I'm not in the business of hurt anyone's feelings, but ultimately, I paid a lot of money for an unsatisfactory service.

The following response has been published by Patient Opinion on behalf of Currambine Psychology Centre.

Dear feeling worse,

My name is Paul and I am one of the two owners of Currambine Psychology Centre. Firstly, let me say how sorry I was to read about your experience at our Centre. On reading through your story, I can see that this must have been disappointing for you. This is not a good outcome especially if you have lost confidence in the people and services which are there to help you.

We would like the opportunity to work with you to for a better outcome. The co-owner Donna or I would be happy to meet with you in person, to see what can be done to rectify the situation, or if you would prefer to simply allow you to give me more specific feedback so that I can help our clinicians learn from this - our phone number is 08 9304 1128. If you would just prefer to chat by email that would obviously be fine too, my email address is paul@cpc.clinic.

Both Donna and I are proud of the usually excellent services that our Centre provides, so we are both very keen to see what went wrong in your case, and to put things right.

In the meantime, please let me know if I can do anything further to help.

Kind regards,

Paul Ward
