"Overcrowded eye clinic: a fall waiting to happen"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

I have been attending the eye clinic for over 2 years and am worried at the lack of space in a clinic where patient vision is impaired or absent.

The best resource this clinic has is the staff. They seem well trained and empathetic and largely try very hard to make the clinic run as well as possible.

I have seen many patients walk into outstretched legs of other patients in the cluttered narrow waiting areas. The nurses are constantly asking patients to move out of hallways to ensure safe access but there is nowhere to go. The admin staff try and attend to patients using the ticketing system but it is difficult for the elderly and vision impaired patients to understand.

I feel stressed and frustrated whilst at the clinic as there just seems to be too many patients. How many are booked in per hour and how many can be seen in an hour?

Dear tulip girl,

Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts on Patient Opinion. We value your feedback and the insights you give us to our clinic. It is wonderful to hear that the staff are well trained and empathetic.

The Eye outpatient clinic is a large clinic and provides specialist care for many patients each day. We endeavour to stagger the appointment times to reduce the feeling of overcrowding for our patients and staff. However, due to clinical needs, at times the clinic can appear to be overcrowded. We are currently in the planning phase of remodelling the clinics, waiting space and patient booking system in attempt to further address the issues you highlight.

I invite you to send additional thoughts to us as your insight is extremely valuable in the planning process. We can be contacted on:

SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au

Kind Regards

Jennie

Dear tulip girl,

Just a quick update to let you know that an interim solution of relocating certain clinics has been implemented, to address the issues you raised around overcrowding and waiting times in the Eye Bicentennial clinic.

Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital strives to provide quality consumer-centred care by building positive partnerships with our patients, so thank you again for taking the time to get in touch and also, allowing us the opportunity to improve our service.

Kind regards

Jennie
