"Cornea Transplant"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 1 East (Ophthalmology)

(as the patient),

Recently, I arrived at Sydney Eye Hospital to have my eye operation. The nurse named Jill was so calming and lovely and it felt like she knew how nervous I was and helped to calm those nerves. She made sure it was a smooth transition to the point where she passed me over to the surgical team.

I cannot thank her enough for the patient love and care that she took to ensure I was okay with taking such a scary procedure, as I was having eye surgery and knew how risky the surgery it was going to be.

From there the surgery team took me on and did an amazing job. From the nurse to the anaesthetist, they were all coming and being very attentive.

However the nurse I had after I had surgery when I was in the ward did not have great bed side manner and it was as if they didn’t want to be there. They checked my blood pressure every half an hour and did it on the arm that I had a cannula in which made it very painful. When I stated that it was painful they didn’t say anything and continued to use the blood pressure machine on the same arm.

The lovely nurse that I had in the morning, Chris was absolutely lovely as well and very easy to talk to. He went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed to go home and even joked that he didn’t want to see me again unless I had surgery again lol.

Even though I was meant to make my own follow up appointment he made the appointment for me as I was confused as to where I needed to call. He made the appointment for me and made sure that I had extra products including eye patches and antibiotics so I could just go home and rest like I needed to.

Thank you Sydney Eye Hospital for making this such an easy and smooth process. I can’t recommend highly enough the care that the staff put into their jobs.

Dear eye surgery patient,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us on Patient Opinion. Your thoughtful feedback is valuable and a reminder for us all, that nurses need to be patient centred and listen to your needs. Jill, Chris and the anaesthetic nurse's care reflects this and it is lovely that you have taken the time to acknowledge them. I will share your story with the staff in a facilitated way that will allow them to reflect on the nursing care they provide.

I trust you are well on the way to recovery and thanks again for your story.

Kind regards

Jennie
