"My parent's care in the geriatric dementia ward"

About: St Vincent's Hospital

(as a carer),

My parent was a patient at SVH and only through my own efforts was I able to bring them home. If they had stayed longer than a week they wouldn't have been able to walk at all. Only after being home for a week and half had their mobility improved with home physio daily. But we have been battling respiratory issues which include wheezing, terrible coughs and breathing problems, as they had been in a room for 6 days with a patient with pneumonia at SVH.

My parent wears incontinence pants and these were often left unchanged for approx 6 or more hours during the day. This resulted in a terrible stench of urine and faeces and the possibility of bladder infection.

The other patients in the room were also often neglected resulting in one patient falling and hitting their head on the wall.

On discharge from the hospital we left with my parent in our hired wheelchair without anyone to help me get them into the car. A patient outside the hospital in a wheelchair without any legs of offered to help us.

My parent has been a patient at SVH previously in this ward and the treatment was excellent, but unfortunately this time it was completely the opposite.
