"Surgery After Care"

About: Sale Hospital

(as the patient),

I found out that I had an ectopic pregnancy. We are from another town and as they didn't have the facilities there we had to come to Sale. The staff here are lovely and very helpful.

My issue is I am in a room with 3 men. After having such an emotional and very private surgery I was under the impression that I would be placed in a women's ward to recover. I have no issue with being in a mixed gender room for any other procedure. But to have my pregnancy removed and then be placed into this room and expected to share a toilet and bathroom with these men is so very disrespectful. It may be just another procedure to medical staff but to me my baby died yesterday and I am a grieving mother.

Mental health is just as important as physical health but here at Sale I get the feeling that we are just numbers and beds. I do hope this doesn't fall on deaf ears and no other mother has to go through the grief and humiliation like I have.

Dear Grieving1

I am very very sorry for your loss and for adding to your grief.

I was pleased to be able to meet with you in hospital and to apologise to you personally and assure you that your story has not fallen on deaf ears.

I caught up with senior nursing staff immediately after leaving you and I want to assure you that you are not just a number to us but we definitely got it wrong putting you in a four bed room with three elderly men.

The nursing coordinator explained to me that for situations such as yours we have believed it to be less stressful to be in a general ward than in our Women's and Children's Ward.

I want to assure you that in the future we will ask our patients where they would prefer to be.

If there is anything we can do to support you at this difficult time please do not hesitate to contact me on 0351438319 or by email at frank.evans@cghs.com.au

Kind regards

Frank
