"Exceptional care at Box Hill Hospital"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My elderly father was admitted to Box Hill Hospital’s emergency department via ambulance suffering from severe shortness of breath.

Mum and I arrived in the emergency department in a state of anxiety and very flustered, where we were met by a very welcoming, calm and kind voice and we were taken straight through to Dad. Dad was then placed in one of the emergency department cubicles where he was treated with absolute respect and wonderful care by all the nursing and medical staff. The whole process was done very professionally and with us feeling that their number one priority was to sort Dad out. After some blood tests, chest x-rays, etc, he was put on oxygen. We were advised that Dad was going to be admitted to Ward 5.1. Shortly after this advice, the pharmacist from the ward introduced herself and spoke to the three of us about Dad’s medication which is something that was very useful for us.

Dad was then transferred to Ward 5.1. Initially located in a shared room, the nursing staff upon his arrival, introduced themselves, settled him in, took his blood pressure, etc and arranged for him to have some lunch. He was placed on high flow oxygen to help him with his breathing. Later that afternoon a swab was taken and it was determined that Dad was suffering from the flu and pneumonia. Dad was transferred to a single room. I can honestly say 100% that I cannot fault the whole process from the very friendly cleaning staff to the staff delivering the meals. The nursing staff provided Dad with the care that we, his carers, welcomed and of course, he had his favourites! The medical staff provided us with regular updates on Dad’s progress. The occupational therapist and physiotherapist provided Dad with the equipment he needed to come home safely.

I am very happy to say that Dad is now back home and doing reasonably well. The three of us are extremely appreciative of all that was done for Dad during his stay at Box Hill Hospital.
