"Ambulatory care."

About: Bathurst Base Hospital

(as the patient),

I recently had a infusion of over 4 hours in the ambulatory care unit at Bathurst Hospital and was surprised at the lack of safety protocol in place:

Not once was I asked for name or date of birth or any other form of ID during the whole procedure.

No blood pressure or other obs. were done prior to start of the infusion (although these were commenced after approx. 1 hour).

No cross checking of medicine doses were done that I could see. Staff were initially unclear on the procedure and asked me for clarification (I have had this procedure many times previously at Concord Hospital)

The chair I was seated in had a flip up armrest. I discovered there was a spill of what appeared to be liquid blood from a previous patient under this armrest (this was cleaned up).

When my cannula was removed it was done over this armrest with no covering underneath, so easy to see how these residues can occur.

Staff were pleasant and friendly but I am concerned by the lack of precautionary protocol evident in this unit.
