"Cultural sensitivity"

About: Canberra Hospital

(as the patient),

Recently I was admitted to the Canberra Hospital with appendicitis. All staff at the hospital were fantastic, caring and friendly however I came across a weird instance where I was roomed with a male. Being an Indigenous Australian I found this quite confronting and uneasy. I asked the nurse if I could be moved with a female, and the reply I got was there's only a female room of 4 or 2 shared with males. I couldn't understand why the males weren't put together. The head nurse was great and put me in a single room pending no patients requiring isolation. The next day I was asked to move to a shared room as the single was required, I was placed again with a male except that he was an elderly gentleman. I'm wanting to voice this as cultural insensitivity and it should be known that men and women should not be roomed together. This is a no no for my culture and many religions. Overall the hospital was great no fault at all, the facilities, amenities and staff were all great, just need to recognise cultural sensitivities.
