"Emegency Department"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Recently I saw my GP and was advised to go to the Emergency Department in Sale as I needed to be placed on a drip for dehydration and for pain management. I had been bleeding from the bowel for days and was losing weight. I arrived to the ED in the early afternoon and was seen by the nurse at which time I gave her the letter from my GP. I was informed to wait in the waiting room and was told I would be next in. There was only one other person in the waiting room. Time went by, more people came in and had been seen and left, I was in pain and still waiting and losing blood. I got up 2 hours after I had arrived and asked the staff to give me my letter back as I was going to get my spouse to take me to Traralgon since they were not seeing me. Yes, I got angry since I was in so much pain. Once I got angry at how I was treated, they immediately took me to the cubical and took blood but I was told I did not need the drip! Why, I do not know, when my GP told me I needed it. I was then sent home with a promise that I would be booked in to have a surgical procedure in 2 weeks. I was given no medication, no information to inform me why I am bleeding and why I am in pain. I paid to see my GP and they instructed me to go to ED, I did not just expect to be seen without first going to my GP unlike so many who use ED as a GP clinic. Very unhappy with the service. It seems to me that CGH has dropped its service.

Dear Waiting in pain

Thank you very much for sharing your story with us. I am really very sorry that your experience of our Emergency Department has left you so unhappy.

I will ask our Director of Emergency Medicine to undertake a thorough review of your case so that we can learn from it and make improvements.

In the meantime, if you feel that there is anything we can do to help, please contact me by email me at frank.evans@cghs.com.au or call me on 0351438319.

I would also be happy to meet with you and involve our senior emergency department staff if that is something you feel comfortable to do?

Once again, please accept my apologies on behalf of Central Gippsland Health. I will get back to you once we have completed our review.

Kind regards,

Frank Evans
