"Ophthalmology Oncology Outpatient Clinic"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Eye Diseases and Surgery (Ophthalmology)

(as a carer),

My husband has had a number of visits to this unit, and for half of those visits his injection has not be prepared and ready for his appointment, which then means a nearly two hour wait for us. We travel from a long distance, and a trip up and back for a visit can take between 5-6 hours, round trip. One visit we were not expecting to have the injection so we travelled by train and had to return home during peak hour. By the time we got home the reaction from the injection had set in and I had to leave my husband on a bench uncontrollably shaking whilst I went to get the car. My husband also suffers from severe depression and anxiety and has suffered a stroke and has diminished strength on his right side and none of these factors seem to come into consideration when making or keeping booked appointment times. Everyone gets put into the same basket and you just become a number. I am hoping this brings around some improvement in services supplied.

Dear no consideration,

Thank you for taking the time to share your disappointing experience with the Oncology Outpatients Clinic. I would like to unreservedly apologise to you and your husband for falling well short of your expectations and for any undue delays and inconvenience we may have caused you on your visit to RPH.

The concerns you raised have been taken very seriously, and we are working with our Opthalmology team to address these to prevent this from occurring in the future. Previous changes to the way the clinic is run, such as having a dedicated pharmacist and speeding up Medicare Authorisations, have been improving our treatment timeframes, but clearly there are still gaps that we need to address.

Our outpatient’s clinic would very much like to learn from your experience and ensure we provide you with a better service in the future. I would be happy to speak to you privately in this regard, please feel free to contact my office on 9224 2219 for a confidential meeting or telephone conversation.

Thank you again for sharing your experience and I hope to hear from you soon and that you have a more pleasing experience next time you and your husband visit RPH.

Sincerely

Dr Lesley Bennett
