"Amazing compassion from nurses and doctor"

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I have an anxiety condition which is usually beautifully managed with self care, exercise, etc. However, about once a year I seem to experience a big melt down. This happened to me recently when some bad news triggered me, and I wasn't able to sleep one wink, all I could do was cry in fear and despair. It was like wave after wave of intense grief crashing down on me.

I drove myself down to the emergency department of Broome Hospital. I was a mess, weeping. The nurses behind the emergency windows were extremely caring and kind in how they spoke to me. When I said I felt embarrassed - because it's a small town and I someone I know might see me crying - they arranged for me to wait in a little room area away from the emergency department waiting area.

Then the doctor who attended to me was extremely kind and compassionate. He reassured me that I may feel like the world was caving in, but it was only because I hadn't slept, and that my anxiety made things seem more frightening than they were. The expressions on both the nurses' faces and the doctor's face were ones of compassion and their words helped reassure me, and made me feel like it was going to be okay.

I headed home, and after a good sleep I was fine. I hope this story reaches those nurses and the doctor who were extremely professional at the same time as being extremely compassionate. Their compassion was like healing balm. I feel so grateful for them and wish to thank them. They are great at their jobs and treasures in our world.
