"Dangerous Entry"

Our hospital in Collie has had a lot of alterations to it. But they still need to make improvements. I have addressed it with them, but they still haven't got back to me or made any changes.

I have to go to the hospital for monthly blood tests. I'm lucky to still have my leg and I may yet lose it. I have to use a wheelie walker. Twice I have jammed my leg in the door because I can't get through it quickly enough. The ground is very uneven at the entrance of the hospital, which is very dangerous and difficult for people like me. There must be many other people in the same boat. They need to put rails at the front to assist people - the rails wouldn't obstruct traffic. If I could put the rails in myself I would do it.

I hope they will fix it soon.

Dear Wheelie Walker,

Thank you for your feedback and concern for safety at Collie Hospital. The concerns you raise have been followed up by the Collie Hospital Nurse Manager and District Manager, who agree that there is a safety risk which requires addressing. I advise that:

The Pathology doors and Primary Health reception doors have been reviewed and adjusted by maintenance and the problem appears resolved with the doors closing very slowly now. The main entrance is being redesigned to include a specific set down area with bench and that the sloping walk ways will have hand rails installed. I have met recently with local management and maintenance staff and observed patients and their families entering and understand your concerns. The improvement work is being planned and will commence very soon. As a first step temporary bollards have been put in place last week to improve safety for patients entering the main entrance to the hospital. Staff assistance is available to escort patients to their car if required. The Nurse Manager can be contacted on 9735 1430 to arrange assistance.
