"Reception lacking photocopier"

About: Sale Hospital

(as other),

On recent admission to Sale Hospital with my parent, there was a need to photocopy medical documents for my parent's file that were relevant to their treatment (Discharge Summary from previous hospital, etc) I was directed to Reception but was told they did not have a photocopier, then redirected to Human Resources, that was fine as it was during working hours.

on the weekend my parent needed an Echocardiogram with monthly visiting specialist who made some urgent hand written notes (prior to formal written report) to take to my parent's GP at the Monday morning appointment. Specialist wanted me to have a copy of my parent's notes for the doctor and keep a copy for my parent's formal report. Specialist walked with me to reception needing to use a photocopier and was told they didn't have one, and being a Sunday, Human Resources was closed. It appeared that all present were quite frustrated that a fairly basic piece of office equipment was not available at Reception for use on weekends by visiting specialists etc. This has resulted in urgent notes between medical services not being readily available in a timely fashion to facilitate my parent's best care. I saw the Patient Opinion card at reception and here I am to express my concern and opinion. Thanks.

Dear copy copy

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story.

I am sorry to learn that you had so much difficulty getting copies of your parent's medical notes.

There are photocopiers located in all the wards and the outpatient areas where your parent's echocardiograph was performed.

I am unsure why you were taken to reception and we will now ensure everyone on the wards and in our outpatients areas are aware of locations of the photocopier's and are able to use them.

Thank you once again for bringing this to our attention and for enabling us to make a an improvement.

Kind regards

Frank

Update posted by copy copy (other)

I am guessing because it was a Sunday, (outside usual outpatient hours) the outpatient receptions, waiting rooms etc were not staffed - other than by the visiting specialist calling in the next patient himself and for this visit, we were not admitted to a Ward. Would it hurt the Hospital budget to put a photocopier in main reception area/front desk? It seems the obvious place to have one as they are mostly in attendance, thanks anyway for your reply.

Dear copy copy,

Sorry for taking so long getting back to you.

We are making sure that people in the clinical areas are aware of where the photocopiers are and how to use them. We feel this is more efficient than people having to go to reception.

We are, however, checking to see if our reception staff would benefit from a photocopier and if they believe it will improve our service for our patients.

If this is the case we will also provide one at reception.

Kind regards

Frank
