"My inpatient experience Esperance Health Campus."

About: Esperance Health Campus / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was admitted initially as a day patient for foot surgery at Esperance. I was very anxious re the day patient status from the perspective of post op pain control and having to manage at home alone. One of the theatre nursing staff approached the surgeon and informed him of this and he was quite happy for me to stay overnight. I was impressed with this good patient advocacy and very appreciative.

My theatre experience was uneventful. I do recall the anaesthetist asking the theatre nurse to remove my ID band as he was having access difficulties - this caused me momentary angst, but I felt that my identity had been appropriately established by this time and that I was in good hands. I also recall being very glad that I wasn't in an operating theatre in a large metropolitan hospital where having an ID band removed could have catastrophic consequences!

I was extremely impressed with the level of caring and professional expertise when I arrived at the ward. The nurses noticed immediately that the ID band was missing and replaced it, immediately. Their attention to correct patient and procedure matching protocols was meticulous - every time I was given any meds I was appropriately checked by two registered nurses. Furthermore, the medication I was being given was fully explained and length of time it would take to work was also explained - this was very reassuring. I also noted that every nurse attended to hand hygiene every time she was in my room according to the five moments of hand hygiene, again, very reassuring. Whilst I am a registered nurse, I do not work in a hospital setting and was quite anxious about having to have surgery and becoming a patient and the actions of all the staff at Esperance Health Campus alleviated my concerns and hastened my recovery. Thank you to all.

Dear bellababy,

Thank you for sharing your story with us through Patient Opinion. It is reassuring to hear of your positive experience and I will pass your feedback onto the staff in both the theatre and Inpatient units. Often coming into hospital can be a distressing time for patients so to hear that the staff made you feel at ease is pleasing and that your surgery went well. Once again thank you for writing and I hope you are now on the mend.

Kind Regards

Peter Tredinnick
