"Old falling apart wards"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

As a patient who has a respiratory condition I would expect that there was a need for high quality maintenance in a hospital, especially an old building like G block at SCGH. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the ceiling to see a large build up of dirt and dust on the ceiling and around the sprinkler head. It looked like no one had bothered to clean or do anything for many months (if not longer). The ceiling tiles in one corner of the room have paper towels wedged under them to stop them vibrating. This is hardly what one could call well maintained and fit for purpose.

I have photos of the ceiling and the paper towel wedged under the ceiling tiles.

I have been a long term patient and it appears to me that the hospital is falling apart and the wards are in dire need of refurbishment.

Dear dire need of refurbishment

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with me regarding the cleanliness and ageing infrastructure at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I acknowledge and empathise with your concerns. As a patient who attends the hospital on a regular basis you are in a unique position to provide us with information about what is adequate and important for patient care needs.

In response to your concerns I will discuss the issue of a maintenance schedule with the Executive Director of facilities management and request that feedback be provided as to the condition of the ward. In relation to the cleanliness I will approach the Manager for patient support services and request that an audit be conducted of this ward.

I will post an update once I receive this information.

Thank you again for sharing your concerns with us.

Kind regards,

Dr Theresa Marshall, Director of Safety, Quality and Performance

Dear dire need of refurbishment,

In follow-up to my earlier response, I have now received feedback from the Facilities Manager and the Manager of Patient Support Services with the outcomes of their reviews. In regards to the air conditioning vents, the cleaning schedule and task list of ward cleaning staff has been revised to ensure these duties are completed when patients are discharged and at the end of each week. Cleaning supervisors will also include inspection of the vents in their schedule. This will commence immediately. In regards to the ceiling sprinklers, these will be added to the task list of Facilities Management maintenance staff. The schedule is being revised at the moment and will commence in the new year. Over the next couple of months, cleaning of these will be arranged when requested.

The Facilities Manager also mentioned in his feedback that during his walk-around and inspection of the wards, he was able to identify other areas requiring maintenance and will be including these in the revised schedule.

We are grateful for your valuable feedback and the opportunity to improve the environment for our patients.

Kind regards

Dr Theresa Marshall, Director of Safety, Quality and Performance
