"Feeling ignored"

About: York Health Service

(as the patient),

A number of weeks ago I sustained a head and leg injury after being assaulted. I was taken to York Hospital for treatment after the incident.

I believed that the wound on my leg was going to need to be stitched, but after the nurse saw me, they decided to glue the wound and bandage it up. While they were doing this I was trying to explain to them what the injury to my head felt like - after being hit in the head around my temple, it felt like fluid or air was gathering on one side of my head. I felt that the nurse wouldn’t listen to what I had to say at all. I asked the nurse to do a scan because I was worried about the danger of fluid and air build up near your temple, but they refused. After bandaging my leg, the hospital just released me with no treatment for my head injury.

At this point my head still does not feel right on one side and I have been getting numbness on that side. My GP has referred me to a specialist in Perth to get it looked at as there may be a fracture.

Why wouldn’t the hospital give me the care I needed after such a dangerous injury?

Dear vulpeculazk45

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Patient Opinion. I was very concerned when I read your story and very sorry that you felt ignored when trying to explain how your head injury felt.

Your experience does not meet our commitment in providing high quality patient centred care and our expectation that staff listen to our patients to ensure we are addressing all of their medical needs.

Patients who present to York Health Service Emergency Department with a suspected head injury must initially be examined by a doctor, accessing the 24/7 Emergency Telehealth Service provided. If determined necessary, the patient is then transferred to the nearest facility with CT Scanner capability. In this case that would be Northam Health Service where a further detailed examination could be undertaken.

I have discussed your story with Trenton Greive, Operations Manager Western Wheatbelt. Trenton would be pleased if you consider contacting him to discuss your concerns in more detail so that we can fully investigate the incident. By undertaking an investigation, we will be able to determine what went wrong and put in place measures to improve our care to patients. Trenton is available on 9690 1310 or email Trenton.greive@health.wa.gov.au

Alternatively you can contact Carolynne Ryan, Patient Opinion Coordinator on 9621 0708 or email Carolynne.ryan@health.wa.gov.au.

I hope that you are recovering from your injury and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards

Sean
