"Pregnancy loss that could have been prevented."

Few weeks back, I came to Armadale Hospital ED, I was pregnant and a first time mum I had so much pain down there - which I explained to the doctors I think it's from my cervix. But they said no, it’s too early for me to feel pain there, they did an ultrasound to check the baby. It was fine, but I still had pain, then I felt they started insisting to inject me with morphine. I refused, but in my opinion, this other doctor kept insisting and coming back to ask me if I am ready for the morphine, finally I gave up and said yes. Straight away, I was injected, then she came back and asked me how is the pain. I said, gone a little bit, I can bare it now. Then she discharged me straight away. I went to a different hospital a few days later, told them the exact thing I told Armadale doctors. The first thing that hospital did was to check my cervix, it was fully opened and they couldn’t save my baby. This is the most painful thing I have had to go through. I am so hurt.

Firstly, I am very sorry to hear of your loss and how distressing and traumatic this experience has been for you.

Your experience deeply concerns me as every patient in our Emergency Department (ED) should be thoroughly examined and provided treatment based on a diagnosis of injury or illness at the time of presentation.

I am committed to investigating this further and would be most grateful if you would consider contacting our Consumer Liaison Service on 9391 1153 or via AKG_ConsumerLiaison@health.wa.gov.au. This will enable me to follow up your concerns, provide you with some answers and reduce the likelihood of a similar incident occurring. I would also like to provide you with some support during this time and am keen to put you in touch with our perinatal loss service.
