I've suffered depression and suicidal thoughts since I was a young child. No-one could understand my mental anguish except perhaps my father - from whom I inherited mental illness - a hard, cruel demon who added to my misery.
I sought psychiatric help as a young adult but it was useless. I briefly tried anti-depressants which simply masked my depression, leaving anxiety underneath. I found pills useless, particularly those that turned me into a zombie.
Trying various 'alternative' therapies, later on, has helped enormously in managing my thoughts. Determined to improve my wellbeing, I devoured books, bought courses & did workshops, all of which assisted in small ways to develop a more positive mindset. Visiting a psychologist for over a decade has also provided a necessary outlet for discussion of my progress. My psychologist gives me 'homework' which enhances my self-help theories and more importantly, they respect my views on complementary therapies, making our discussions relevant and productive.
I am very happy with the help I receive and highly recommend having an objective person with whom to work through anxieties. Just knowing that I can tell them my personal concerns is my saving grace.
