"Outstanding care"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a relative),

My parent was admitted with bleeding due to stomach ulcers recently. Their Hb was down to 47 and they nearly died as a result. To make matters worse, because of their faith, blood was an issue as my parent would not accept a blood transfusion, further complicating treatment. Despite this restriction, the doctors and nurses in the ED, and later HDU, did all they could. Their care was outstanding. They did an amazing job, were incredibly organized and very professional. My parent was critical on Friday and we nearly lost them, but, to the amazement of the doctors, my parent pulled through. Even now the staff are impressed with their recovery.

We have had a great deal of experience with near death and critical situations the past 2 years across SCGH, RPH and Mount Hospitals. We have experienced a variety of nurses and doctors. I wish to convey our family's thanks and gratitude to the SCGH HDU and in particular Dr Matthew's team. Nurse Gabrielle was exceptionally caring and understanding not only to her patient, but the family as well.

I have nothing negative to say except that perhaps elderly patients with delirium should receive closer monitoring. I have experienced this twice now and it is why I chose to stay next to my parent's bedside in order to prevent them from pulling out respiratory aids, cannulas and generally keeping them calm. Also, some nurses managed my parent's delirium better than others.

Dear velass67,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your recent experience of the SCGH ED (Emergency Department) and HDU (High Dependency Unit) with us. It is heartening to hear that the care and support your parent received during their time with us had an excellent clinical outcome; and left both your parent and family with a warm and positive impression.

I also appreciate your feedback regarding caring for patients with delirium, and acknowledge this can be challenging. I would like to reassure you that staff use a number of clinical tools and protocols to care for these patients and I know they would have been very grateful for your support on this occasion.

I will ensure that your message of thanks is forwarded to the ED and HDU teams.

I wish you, your parent and family the best for a continued recovery.

Kind regards

Jennifer Francis
