"Feeling safe in hospital"

About: Derby Hospital

(as the patient),

I was admitted recently to the general ward with a fever, etc. No possibility of getting blood results at the time, so was quite concerned what was wrong. That night I had a psychiatric patient on the same ward come into my room 3 times even though the door was closed the final time. The 2 nurses on duty where great, but this encounter made the rest of my stay in hospital (mainly night time) very traumatic. The patient was heavily sedated the following night, but I still didn't feel safe or able to sleep. I was very close to discharging myself. I'm not sure of security or protocol for such an incident, but I would not wish this on any one, let alone some one ill and attached to a drip with no defence.

Dear araxs96,

We are very sorry that you had a traumatic experience whilst an inpatient. The situation you have described is not what we would expect at Derby Hospital, and we would certainly like to investigate and ensure this does not happen to any other inpatients.

We aim to provide compassionate care and a good experience for all our patients, carers and consumers and can only address issues in our service provision when these are identified to us.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience at Derby Hospital and your kind words regarding the nursing staff.

In order for us to investigate this situation further, we will need some more details from you. Could you please contact the Coordinator of Nursing, Julie Kirk on

0427 641 739 or email Julie.kirk@health.wa.gov.au.

We hope you are making a speedy recovery and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards

Rachele Humbert
