"Regarding the food at the cafe."

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was heavily pregnant and attending a parenting education session. During the lunch break me and my spouse went to the cafe at King Edward Memorial Hospital and grabbed a vegetarian sandwich, a sweet chilli chicken wrap and a slice of banana bread for lunch.

Soon after having this lunch, I started feeling sick and vomited during the teaching session. The vomiting continued for the next two days. We also brought this to the attention of the midwife who was conducting the teaching session. She mentioned that she would raise the issue. We haven't heard anything back from the hospital regarding this, since then.

I urge the hospital management to investigate this incident. It is not the first time their food has made me sick. I have previously felt the staleness of their food when I bought a chicken sandwich from the same shop and had to discard it, just after having two bites. I vomited once after those two bites. I forwent the incident, assuming it to be a one-off incident.

I believe the hospital management needs to look into and ensure appropriate hygiene standards are adhered to at this cafe.

Dear Bebo,

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. I am sorry that you became unwell shortly after eating in the café. The concerns you raised with the midwife during your education class on Saturday were raised with the café manager yesterday January 10.

I have personally spoken to the café manager about your experience today and have been advised no other person eating the meals you identified became unwell that day. While I am uncertain why you became unwell, I can reassure you that the meals were prepared and cooked fresh on the day. Further, I can reassure you that the café is accredited under food safety standards with which they have been compliant each time they have been audited.

I hope that all is going well for your pregnancy and wish you all the best for when your new baby is born.

Again, thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.

Kind Regards,

Graeme Boardley
